Felicia BrannonAlgebra 1Operations on MatricesObjectives:
The Learner will be able to add matrices, subtract matrices, multiply a matrix by a scalar, identify equal matrices.
The learner will be able to identify the parts of a matrix, tell the rules related to adding/subtracting matrices.
The learner will be able to perform operations on matrices based on addition, subraction, and scalar multiplication.

NC SCOS:

Objective 3.02 Operate (addition, subtraction, scalar multiplication) with matrices to solve problems.

Description of Lesson: Students will do a warm-up assignment to be turned in using thier iPods. Students will then get laptops/ipods and go to matrix applet from curriculum pathways and do practice questions and a quiz. Afterwards, direct instruction on mtrices and calculators.

The Matrix?!?!?!?

SITUATION:
a. On your iPod go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyAuNHPsq-g and watch video “Introduction
to Matrices”.
b. Answer the following questions as you watch the video.
c. Turn in the questions when complete. You have 15 min.
d. You may write on this.

YOUR TASK:
1. What is a matrix?

2. Are the rows of a matrix vertical or horizontal?

3. True or False. A column is vertical?

4. In the video, what is B[3,2]?

5. Explain how to add 2 matrices.

Transition/Guided Practice
As the students complete and turn in their warm-up, he/she will get his/her assigned laptop. After logging in the student will go to www.sascurriculumpathways.com and log-in then do applet 1216. (Applet 1216 is linked as 'Matrix Applet' that is shown below). The student will do the practice questions 1-15 all and after the practice take the quiz answering questions 1-13 all.
Matrix Applet (Time allowed 30 min)

Assessment(Check for Understanding)
When students complete the 'Matrix Applet', the student will answer the questions on 'Brannon Matrix Operations #1' and submit them. (This assignment is linked at the top of the page called 'Link to Spreadsheet'.)--(Time allowed 7-10 min without questions or 15 min with questions)

Calculator Usage
Now I'll provide direct instruction on how to input matrices and how to add, subtract and scalar multiply matrices in the calculator. We will also discuss what various error messages mean and some common errors that are made when inputting matrices. Sample discussion questions are as follows: 1.What does 'dim mismatch' mean? 2.How do you get to the matrix screen using the TI-83+ vs TI-83? 3.When inputting a matrix into the calculator what dimension is put in first, the column or the row?
